Since then, each year Allens funds a full-time solicitor to lead the IJP and its advocacy, strategic litigation and policy work to address issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The IJP also provides legal advice and undertakes casework in the areas of racial discrimination, deaths in custody, unlawful arrest and civil claims against the police. One of the projects major achievements was the submission of over 500 stolen wages cases to the NSW Aboriginal Trust Fund Repayment Scheme. The firm has acted for Indigenous clients in dozens of stolen wages disputes, including for Robert Kitchener who became a ward of the Child Welfare Board in 1960 when he was just three years old. Kitchener was made to work, without payment, for eleven years at various institutions and foster homes. The firm successfully recovered unpaid wages for Kitchener from the repayment scheme, which was operational from 2004 to 2011. Indigenous Legal Internship Program Since 2006 Allens has provided opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law students to experience life at a commercial law firm through the Allens Indigenous Legal Internship Program. Students who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander participate in a two-week internship program at the firm. The students engage witha range of people across the firm, expanding their skills and experience and receiving career support and mentoring beyond the formal conclusion of the internship.
